Bladder infection, cystocele and urinary incontinence are among the most frequent bladder disorders that affect women.

Urinary Incontinence

Urinary incontinence: the involuntary passage of urine that affects millions of women. Nearly 40 percent of women age 60 and older experience some degree of urinary incontinence. Pelvic muscle weakness proves the most common cause of female urinary incontinence.

Urine leakage typically occurs when the pressure inside the abdomen and pelvis increases, such as with coughing, sneezing, laughing or straining. Exercises to increase pelvic muscle strength can help alleviate this form of urinary incontinence.

Overactive bladder: characterized by frequent muscle spasms of the bladder, also causes urinary incontinence. Ten to fifteen percent of adult women in the United States experience symptoms of overactive bladder, many of whom have frequent episodes of urinary incontinence.

4 Types of Urinary Incontinence

When you can't control the release of your urine, you have urinary incontinence. For some the problem can be as minor as the rare dribble, for others as problematic as wetting your clothes.

  • Stress incontinence - is that little leak that happens when you cough, laugh, sneeze.
  • Urge incontinence - the urgent need to go, followed by an involuntary loss of urine.
  • Mixed incontinence - means you have more than one type of incontinence, with stress and urge incontinence being the typical mix.
  • Overflow incontinence - If you can't empty your bladder every time you go to the bathroom and experience a frequent or constant dribbling of urine, you have overflow incontinence.
