Menopausal Phases | Disorders | GYN Services

Do not assume that if you miss a couple of periods the cause is menopause. Come in and see Dr Hinson to find out if a health problem could be the cause. Menopause has four distinct phases.  We recommend that if you have not had a period for a year and then start "spotting.", set an appointment with Dr Hinson for a thorough examination (GYN Services). Phases of Menopause

  • Pre-menopause
  • Perimenopause
  • Menopause
  • Post-menopause

Menopause is the point in time when a woman's menstrual periods stop. Some people call the years leading up to a woman's last period to be "menopause," but that time actually is perimenopause.

The average age of menopause is 51, but for some women it happens in their 40s or later in their 50s. Sometimes called “the change of life,” menopause is a normal part of life. For a description of symptoms of menopause see the list below.

Treatment for Menopausal Problems

It is not necessary to get treatment for your symptoms unless they are bothering you. Most women can make simple lifestyle changes that help manage the symptoms, and most symptoms will go away on their own. If you’re interested in medical treatments like menopausal hormone therapy (HRT), call Dr Hinson and discuss the benefits vs. risks.

The truth is that hormone changes brought about in menopause affect every woman differently. Also, symptoms sometimes are not caused by menopause but by other causes, such as normal aging.

Symptoms of menopause include:

  • Irregular periods
  • Hot flashes (or flushes)
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Trouble sleeping through the night
  • Night sweats (hot flashes that make you sweat while you sleep)
  • Vaginal and urinary problems
  • Mood changes
  • Decrease in libido or sex drive
  • Forgetfulness or trouble focusing
  • Losing muscle, gaining fat, and having a larger waist
  • Feeling stiff or achy

The term menopause is used to refer to the entire process of pre-menopause through post-menopause. Dr Hinson can educate and inform you about the exact phase you are experiencing
