Pelvic organ prolapse is something that most women suffer from at some point in their lives. It often happens after childbirth, as the uterus has stretched and moved the internal organs out of their place. Pregnancy, childbirth, and age can weaken the muscles of the pelvic floor.

The pelvic organs are the cervix, uterus, urethra, bladder, rectum, and vagina. Some symptoms of it are:

  • Vaginal pain during intercourse
  • Feeling as though something is falling out of your vagina
  • Feeling the pressure of the organs pressing against the vaginal wall
  • Incontinence
  • Frequent urination
  • A “felling full” sensation in your lower stomach

None of these alone are a sure indication of pelvic prolapse, and it’s best to talk to your doctor. It could be that the symptoms are being caused by something else together. But if it is pelvic prolapse, getting the proper treatment is essential.

There are non surgical treatments that may work well, such as Kegel exercises and a pessary. Kegel muscles support the uterus, small intestine, bladder, and rectum. Exercising these muscles can strengthen their support.  A pessary is a plastic device that is inserted through the vagina to support the uterus.
