BRCA Testing

American women have long heard of both breast and ovarian cancer. Either one can pose a real threat at any age, and if a woman has had one of the cancers, she may be especially worried about developing another.

Some women want to know if they are at high risk for getting breast or ovarian cancer. Often, these women have a family history of cancer, and may have what is called Hereditary Breast and Ovarian Cancer (HBOC) syndrome. HBOC Syndrome is an inherited risk of developing breast or ovarian cancer and it is estimated that 5% of people who have breast cancer and 15% of women who have ovarian cancer have HBOC syndrome. HBOC is caused by a genetic mutation. With HBOC, the gene mutation provides less protection with breast and ovarian cancer.

While it is impossible to know for certain if you are going to develop any cancer, there is a genetic test that can help you know if you are at a higher risk for breast or ovarian cancer through the gene mutation. It is called the BRCAdvantage test.

The test is only for certain people, and you must discuss both the pros and cons with Dr. Hinson in order to decide if it is right for you. There are many factors that might make you decide the test is ideal for your situation such as:

  • Having a strong family history of breast or ovarian cancer
  • You have already experienced one of these cancers before the age of 50
  • Have had a blood relative with the genetic mutation

The BRCAdvantage test looks for mutations in two different genes: the BRCA1 and the BRCA2. If a mutation is found, you will discuss further cancer prevention methods with Dr. Joanne Hinson. The BRCAdvantage test is designed to help you and your loved ones make the most educated opinion possible in regards to your health and guarding against cancer.

While finding the gene does not promise that you will have cancer, it is equally important to note that the lack of the mutated gene doe not promise that you won’t. Cancer prevention is important in all stages of life, regardless of family and personal history. Contact Dr. Joanne Hinson's office today to schedule an appointment.
