STD Are Not Just For Young Women | Risk for Older Women

As most of us know the popular STDs are Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, Herpes and HPV. But one less well-known and generally under-screened STD is actually pretty common among women over 40: Trichomoniasis.

Trichomoniasis (or “trich”) is a very common sexually transmitted disease (STD) that is caused by infection with a protozoan parasite called Trichomonas vaginalis. Although symptoms of the disease vary, most women and men who have the parasite cannot tell they are infected.  Infection is more common in women than in men, and older women are more likely than younger women to have been infected.  About 70% of infected people do not have any signs or symptoms.

In fact, a new study found that 13% of women over the age of 40 have the parasite that causes Trichomoniasis, or what many call “Trich” for short. While it’s usually asymptomatic in men, women can have plenty of cringe-worthy uncomfortable symptoms and health side effects, like pelvic inflammatory disease. In short, this disease is no picnic.

Women with trichomoniasis may notice itching, burning, redness or soreness of the genitals, discomfort urinating, or a thin discharge with an unusual smell that can be clear, white, yellowish, or greenish.  The STD can be treated with a one week dosage of antibiotics.  Research has found the infection is twice more prevalent in 40+ women than in younger ladies because it is not well screened for.

We all know STDs are a sticky subject, but if you are a woman over 40, it is worth seeking out what your risks may be.  We believe that communication is the way to keep healthy at any age but when it comes to STDs for women over 40 it is just as important as when you were younger.  Please call Dr. Hinson for further information about STDs or any other gynecological need you may have at 801-364-4030.
